About HealthyAir

The HealthyAir project specifically focuses on the effects of building materials on indoor air quality and consequently on the health and comfort of occupants of indoor spaces.

There are several ways to improve indoor air quality, ranging from source control to education of occupants on how to handle their indoor environment in such a way that the indoor air stays or becomes healthy and acceptable. In the HealthyAir project, running in the period 2007-2010, these different ways are handled.

In the project three important target groups are considered: the producers of construction products, the architects/designers who select the construction products and the endusers/building owners who are exposed to the emissions from the construction products.

The general objective is to define, initiate and develop activities that improve indoor air quality and reduce exposure to indoor air pollution sources, in particular of construction products. The project has four specific objectives:

  • To provide a state-of-the-art on the effects of construction products on indoor air quality, the effet of indoor air pollution on occupants and the sources of pollution responsible for that
  • To provide the opportunity for mutual information exchange between different "worlds" on indoor air quality
  • To identify gaps of knowledge and identify solutions
  • To define actions and activities that improve indoor air quality and reduce exposure to indoor air pollution, such as construction products, furnishing products and other indoor pollution sources in terms of research required, technology development, education and dissemination.

HealthyAir is sponsored by the European Commision DG Sanco, programme of community action in the field of public health (2003-2008).
